Math Tutor
Larry was a victim of the Tech Wreck/dot com bust in 2001 – his 30 year career as an engineer and programmer with Lucent Technologies came to an end, and he began tutoring some high school students in math and physics while looking for another job in his profession.
Before he knew it, tutoring was his profession! He dug back into textbooks, and soon knew more mathematics and science than he had in college. Explaining things to students turned out to be an interesting and satisfying process, with more immediate reward than writing computer programs and playing corporate politics. In 2006 he joined Parkaire Consultants as a math and science tutor for middle and high school students.
Larry’s tutoring philosophy is that every student first needs to believe that they can succeed, so that lots of encouragement and positive feedback are helpful. Also, many students become more motivated if they are shown that mathematics has applications in their areas of interest.
Larry holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech.
